Theresa was born in Rugby, North Dakota on October 19, 1924, the daughter of Lawrence and Angeline (Massine) Krim. She was raised in Jefferson Township, Pierce County, near Balta, North Dakota and attended country school there. She married Frank J. Mattern on July 1, 1947 in Balta, North Dakota. They lived in the Balta, Rugby and Knox area until 1954 when they moved to a farm in Kottke Valley Township, McHenry County, southeast of Deering, North Dakota. They lived and farmed there until Frank passed away May 1, 1995. In 1996, Theresa sold the farmstead and moved to an apartment in Minot, North Dakota. She resided in Minot until the flood of 2011 and then relocated to Glasgow, Montana. She was a member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Glasgow, Montana and she and Frank were members of St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Minot, North Dakota.
Theresa was a homemaker who loved to garden, providing her family with fresh and canned produce. She enjoyed cooking and baking for extended family dinners. A place at the table and a bed were always available at Theresa’s house. Her home was always kept spotless and many were heard to comment that you could eat off the floor. She loved music and in earlier years she and Frank loved to dance to the old time music at family weddings. Theresa was an avid follower of the local, state and world news. She kept the family up to date on what was happening in the world and was even known to discuss politics occasionally. During dinner hour at Nemont Manor, she was known to entertain her table of lady friends with jokes and stories (affectionately called the Rowdy Bunch). Weekends you would find her watching either golf or NASCAR on TV. She loved visiting and entertaining her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Since living in Glasgow, she considered Bonnie, Char, Connie and Kari as her girls and was a mother to all.
Theresa is survived by daughters: Betty Ell of Minot, North Dakota and Rose (Greg) Speer of Fort Peck, Montana; grandchildren: Bruce (April) Sloan, Bonnie (Robert) Richter, Zebulon (Cedar) Speer; great-grandchildren: Joshua Sloan, Kami Sloan, Jasmine Green, Daniel Green, Waylon Richter and Ocean Speer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents; brothers; Jack, Anton Markus, Steve, Joe, Mike, John, Leo, Peter and Rochus; sisters: Caroline and Anna; son-in-law: Dennis and great-grandson, Donovan.
Our Mother Theresa will be missed by all.
