Josephine “Jo” Marie Lauckner Dorsey – 81
Josephine “Jo” Dorsey was born on November 24, 1936 in Glasgow, Montana. She was the daughter of William A. Lauckner and Hilda Marie Beer Lauckner. Jo attended twelve years of school, graduating from Nashua School, in Nashua, Montana. She continued her education studying business in Fargo, North Dakota.
Jo married John Lawrence Dorsey, on June 24, 1961. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage before John passed away on February 18, 2013. Jo is survived by her son, William Lawrence Dorsey “Larry”, daughter-in-law Tracy Dorsey and three grandchildren Alexis (22), Kohl (20) and Regan (16) who currently reside in Arizona. Her Montana family includes her sister, Helen Lauckner Heikens (husband-Bob), brothers Andy (wife-Jamie) and Bill Lauckner (wife-Myrna) along with numerous treasured nieces and nephews.
Jo knew how to work hard, in fact, she was most happy when busily working and serving others. Growing up in Montana, Jo began working on the family farm at a young age. Her first job was at Farmers Union Market. She was also employed at First National Bank of Glasgow, Farmer’s Stock Growers Bank of Glasgow, First Security Bank of Montana, and Norwest Bank. She finished her 35 year banking career at Wells Fargo Bank of Glasgow, retiring on March 31, 2000.
Although the majority of Jo’s life was spent living on the highline in Nashua, Montana, she also resided in Missoula, Montana for two years and in Gary, Indiana for three years. She moved to Billings, Montana in August of 2015 to be closer to medical care. Throughout her life, she was surrounded with a special love from her brother Andy’s family. She shared laughter amid many adventures and fun times enjoying a special closeness with her sister-in-law, best friend and caregiver, Jamie Lauckner, brother Andy, niece Katrina (and Lance) and her best buddy, Brexton. While she lived in Billings, Jo also enjoyed many family gatherings with her niece Gayle, nephews Bradley and Andrew, and their families.
A strong Christian, Jo will be remembered for her kindness and quiet strength. As a long-time member of the Lutheran Church, she assisted with numerous church and community functions. At the Nashua Senior Citizens Center, she was an assistant cook for senior meals where she served alongside her good friend, Pat Neulieb. She also aided in the distribution of commodities for many years. Jo belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary of Montana. One of her most loved ventures involved joining P.D.Q.s in Nashua where she was honored to sew memory quilts for families. Jo enjoyed cooking, baking and canning. An important tradition she passed on to her brother, Andy and niece, Katrina is the making of kapusta and padia sauce. Some of her other favorite pastimes included Bingo, Mexican Train, puzzles, hunting and fishing and traveling to rendezvous as a “Mountain Woman” with her husband, John. Jo enjoyed spending time with her large extended family and former co-workers as well as many of the public she knew from working in Glasgow. When visiting her Arizona family, she could often be found in the backyard near the grapefruit or lemon tree enjoying a fresh snack while throwing the ball for Aussie (the family dog) or cheering at one of her grandkids’ sporting events. A fun-loving, proud grandmother, Jo enjoyed hearing about the kids’ activities and achievements when away from them.
After a long, fearless fight battling ovarian, uterus, blood and bone cancer, Jo passed away peacefully in her home at Morning Star Senior Living on February 10th, 2018 at 6:45 pm surrounded by her family’s love. She was blessed by many incredible medical caregivers who walked with her providing support and overall care during this time. Although we will miss her dearly, we know her cheerful spirit will always walk among us.
