Jean Miyasato, Glasgow, Montana, died peaceably of natural causes on March 4, 2017 with family and friends by her side. Jean was born in Box Elder, Montana on March 10, 1924. She was the youngest of five daughters born to Jimmy and Kisano Dohi.
Jean met and married Larry Miyasato in 1954 in Hawaii and had one daughter, Ann Miyasato. Jean’s husband, Larry, was associated with Gordon White and served as deputy county attorney for more than 30 years. After Mr. White’s retirement, Larry served as U.S. magistrate. Jean’s family owned and operated “Mary’s Cafe” in downtown Glasgow where delicious meals and memorable cinnamon rolls were consumed.
Jean was a very accomplished individual. She was an extraordinary seamstress/tailor. She also excelled in the art of fine cuisine and was noted for her culinary talent and her ability to make marzipan was incredible. Boxes or marzipan shaped and colored as various fruits, were given out at Christmas time to family and friends. She could bring to life any fruit and the receiver would forego eating the delicious pieces as they were much too beautiful to consume.
Jean and Larry traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad, attending battalion reunions. Jean learned much more about Larry and war-time experiences as the comrades reminisced. After Larry’s passing Jean sold her home in Glasgow and moved into Prairie Ridge and resided there until health required her to move into Valley View.
Jean was a quiet but generous person. She and her husband Larry would take many friends to Las Vegas, NV just because they wanted their friends with them to attend the 100th and the 442nd reunion which was a famed Japanese-Hawaiian battalion. Initially, Jean remembered that only the veterans were allowed into the reunion, but she and Larry insisted that families be included and they prevailed. After Larry passed away (January 25, 1999) Jean continued hosting family and friends to Las Vegas until health problems made it impossible to travel. Close friends all recall all the many good times with Jean. She always said “Good friends and a good scotch” were essential to a good life. We all heartily agree. Jean will be sincerely missed by family and friends.
