Joan Ellen Beede was born February 25, 1950 to Curtis and LaVerne Beede in Glasgow, Montana. She was the oldest of twins.
Joan grew up in Glasgow with her three brothers and three sisters and attended St. Raphael’s Parochial School and Glasgow High School. While in high school, she worked at the Fashionette. She also worked at Beede’s Mens Wear for a number of years and Rhondas. She enjoyed the retail business and helping people. She also went on an international adventure with her mother and friends visiting various places in Europe.
In 1973, she married Don Johnson and had two daughters, Leslie and Lisa. Her daughters were her main focus and a great source of joy. During this time, she started her long and brave fight with Multiple Sclerosis. She traveled to doctors and tried new medicine to keep the symptoms at bay, so she could enjoy more time with her family. While her girls were young, they spent a few years in Washington State, where she enjoyed the Tulip farms. They returned to Glasgow, Montana where Joan did daycare for family members, she enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews. Slowly, the Multiple Sclerosis took its toll, and in 1998 she moved to Valley View Home, where she resided until May of 2016, when she moved to Billings Health and Rehabilitation to be closer to her daughters and their families. She very much enjoyed visits with her granddaughters.
Throughout her entire lifetime, Joan enjoyed music. She had many happy memories of listening to the golden oldies with her sister Jean. She also loved Christmas time and instilled in her daughters the love of holiday traditions, with a deep focus on family. Her love of the holiday never focused on the gifts, only on the true reason for Christmas.
She is survived by three brothers: Bill (Cathy) Beede, Mick Beede, C.T. (Aynsley) Beede; three sisters: Jeanne (Ken) Molvig, Janet Beede, and Mary (Darrell) Morehouse; two daughters; Leslie (Craig) Vihinen and Lisa (Cyrus) Crabtree and three granddaughters; Cyann Crabtree, Erynn Vihinen, and Avery Vihinen, and many nieces and nephews.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Curtis and LaVerne Beede, and sister-in-law Connie Beede.

I’m sorry for the loss of your dear loved one, Joan, may you find comfort in the God of all comfort, Jehovah, (2 Corinthians 1:3,4) in his word, the bible, in Psalms 34:18: Jehovah is close to the brokenhearted he saves those who are crushed in spirit. God’s word, also says in Isaiah 25:8: He will swallow up death forever, And the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces….For Jehovah himself has spoken it. (Psalms 83:18; Titus 1:2) Isaiah 33:24; Revelation 21:3-5; / John 5;28,29; John 11:25,26; Acts 24:15. This is what God’s Kingdom under Jesus Christ rulership, will accomplish in the near future, for all those who love righteousness. The true God, also promises in his word, in Psalms 37:11,29:. The meek will possess the earth, And they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace, 29: The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it. (Psalms 104;5; Psalms 115:16; Ecclesiastes 1:4; Job 33:25; Isaiah 35:5,6; Isaiah 65;21,22. (New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures)

Joan was part of our St. Raphael’s gang. My desk was just across the isle from her in 8th grade, on the window side of the upstairs classroom. Those were the years when the GAFB kids graced our classrooms at St. Raphael School. Chris Jillson and Dan Crowe were two of the Base boys that we girls had our eyes on. They were always up to some humorous antics that kept our class in stitches and Sister Superior (Sister Francis Jerome) on her toes. Sister placed Joan in the row between Chris and Dan in an attempt to deter their boisterous distractions. Chris sat behind Joan. I had the feeling that he liked Joan in a special way, and maybe I was just a little envious of her. I think I liked Chris too. Joan was sincere and very likable with just the right amount of being quietly demure. She was someone you could trust as a friend. I think Chris could be a bit more serious at times than Dan, because one day he said something touching to me that I’ve always remembered. Coming from a very popular teenage boy, his statement seemed especially sensitive and mature beyond his words. Chris said, “I like to look at Joan’s arms. She has beautiful arms.” I know that may sound trite or even inappropriate, but to me it was an observation and response that involved thoughtfulness and a palpable understanding of who Joan was, and still is, on the inside. Chris, the boy who sat behind her, was struck by something intimate that was part of Joan’s inviting and personal way of relating to others. His words have a spiritual ring to them, characterizing what we all know about Joan. She was, and is, God’s child and a gift to our lives and memories.
